It does not matter who you are or where you live: human hair shares the same basic structure. What makes each person’s hair unique is its texture, density, thickness, curl pattern and individual care needs.

The visible hair shaft is primarily made up of an outer cuticle and an inner cortex. Thicker strands may also contain a central medulla. The cortex forms most of the strand and contributes to its strength, colour and physical characteristics, while the overlapping cells of the cuticle help protect the hair beneath.

Although our hair shares this common structure, it can naturally be straight, wavy, curly or coily. These differences are influenced strongly by genetics—the characteristics inherited from our parents and families.

No texture is better than another.

Our hair is part of our identity, our heritage and, for many people, our crowning glory. We should feel proud of it rather than constantly trying to force it to behave like somebody else’s hair.

The key is to understand what your own hair needs.

Different textures have different needs

Straight or fine hair may become oily more quickly because natural scalp oils can travel down the strand more easily. Heavy products may weigh it down, so lighter formulas and regular cleansing may be more appropriate.

Wavy hair often needs a balance between moisture and lightweight care. Too little conditioning may leave it dry or frizzy, while too much product can reduce its natural movement.

Curly and coily hair commonly needs more moisture and careful handling. The bends and curves in the strand can make it harder for natural oils to move from the scalp to the ends. This can contribute to dryness, tangling and breakage. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends adapting cleansing routines to the individual’s hair and scalp. People with naturally curly, coily or coarse hair may need a different washing frequency from those with fine, straight or oily hair.

Get to know your hair

Healthy hair care is not about following every new trend. It begins with observing your own hair and scalp.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my scalp become oily, dry, irritated or flaky?
  • Does my hair break easily?
  • Does it tangle frequently?
  • Has its density or texture changed?
  • Am I using products suited to my actual hair type?
  • Are my hairstyles placing unnecessary tension on the roots?

Your routine should support your natural texture rather than fight against it. Gentle cleansing, suitable conditioning, careful detangling and consistent scalp care can all help you maintain healthier-looking hair.

Be proud of the hair you have inherited. Learn what it needs, treat it with care and allow its natural beauty to be seen.
