Hair Vitamins: When Supplements Help — and When More Is Definitely Not Better

Walk through almost any pharmacy and you will find tablets promising stronger, thicker or healthier hair.

The idea is appealing: if hair needs nutrients, surely adding more nutrients should produce more hair?

Unfortunately, the body does not work like that.

Supplements make the most sense when something is actually missing

Dermatologists may recommend iron, zinc or biotin when testing shows that somebody is deficient. If levels are normal, however, taking extra does not automatically stimulate follicles.

The American Academy of Dermatology specifically recommends checking for deficiencies rather than taking iron, zinc or biotin indiscriminately.

A 2024 systematic review found that several micronutrients may have relationships with androgenetic hair loss, but results between studies were not entirely consistent. That is very different from proving that a supplement will treat hair loss in a person who has adequate levels.

Biotin has a much bigger reputation than its evidence

Biotin is probably the best-known “hair vitamin”.

True biotin deficiency can affect hair, but deficiency is uncommon. For people without a deficiency, there is little scientific evidence supporting routine high-dose biotin supplements for improving hair.

There is another problem many people do not know about: high-dose biotin can interfere with certain blood tests, including some thyroid and hormone tests. That interference can produce misleading laboratory results.

That is especially relevant when thyroid problems themselves may be investigated as a possible reason for hair loss.

More minerals can sometimes mean more problems

Selenium is an excellent example.

The body needs selenium, but chronically consuming too much can actually cause hair loss and brittle nails.

Iron is another nutrient that should not be taken casually in high doses. Too much iron can be toxic.

In other words, “natural” and “available without a prescription” do not mean “the more the better”.

What about specialist hair supplements?

Some clinical studies of particular nutritional formulations have shown promising results, but the evidence varies considerably by product and study design.

A systematic review published in JAMA Dermatology found potential benefits from several nutritional interventions but also noted that the effectiveness and safety of supplements for people without a known deficiency remain an area where the evidence is still developing.

The results from one branded supplement cannot automatically be applied to a completely different combination of ingredients.

A useful rule before buying another bottle

If your hair is noticeably thinning, ask why before asking which vitamin?

A GP or dermatologist may decide to investigate iron status, thyroid function or other possible causes depending on your symptoms and medical history.

That approach is less glamorous than a viral supplement, but it is far more useful.

Before adding another supplement, look at the whole routine

Healthy-looking hair rarely comes down to one vitamin, one ingredient or one quick fix.

If a genuine deficiency is identified, correcting it may form an important part of addressing hair changes. At the same time, looking after the condition of the scalp and hair you already have can make a noticeable difference to how your hair feels and behaves day to day.

The Netwurks Pro system focuses on that practical side of hair care: regular cleansing, moisture support, conditioning and helping fragile hair remain manageable. It complements a healthy lifestyle without pretending to replace good nutrition or professional advice.

So before buying another bottle of supplements, make sure the basics are covered too — a balanced diet, the right medical advice when necessary, and a consistent hair and scalp routine.
